That's a damn lie! Barndoors are #1 and you know it!

Dutch Door! I knew I could count on someone here to point out ones I had forgotten. Dutch door is pretty great, but it still doesn’t beat splitgate.
GMC knew what Dutch doors were all about.

Ohh, an exotic entry, the powered dual hinge. Lovely. Also found on...
Envoy XUV

You failed to mention the dual opening, like the Roadmaster wagon:
single side:
AND Tailgate:
Best setting ever.

I didn’t know that and my sister in law has one of those. Found out Envoys are stupid easy to break into. The stationary window on the back door is held in with a rubber gasket and you can pop it out with a screw driver and save a child locked in it with the keys while it is running.

Honda Ridgelines have a dual hinge gate for some insane reason. Speaking of, I saw one with a bed cap today. No, really.

I’m going to call it barn door, but yeah, I remember that hatch....what a pain. all the trouble of side hinged with the additional trouble of opening 2 doors. Still, better than the rodeo
A seperate tire swingout and then a 2 piece liftgate.

I see them all the time. Last night in fact I was just starring at in in traffic. At least the ridgeline is longer than a pilot...worse still is when you see them on subaru baja’s

Good to know!

Tailgate with window that winds down from the outside manually into the gate - no lift gate.
![]() 05/15/2015 at 14:18 |
|
Technically its a liftgate in the second instance...so its a win.

Yes, yes of course!

Plus the bigger portion had a lock-open mechanism that I somehow always forgot to pull the first time I tried to shut the door, resulting in me violently jerking the whole thing.
I had a 94 Blazer with a swing out tire and split gate. For the first couple years I owned it the struts for the glass were shot so I had to hold it open with my head when I wanted to get something out.

What about the liftback?
![]() 05/15/2015 at 14:22 |

I’ve owned/own one of each style for a long enough time to know that barndoors are #2.

Didn’t I show a liftback? do you have an example?
![]() 05/15/2015 at 14:23 |

At first I thought the XUV was so clever...and then I thought about it more and realized its a complicated and heavy solution to a non-problem. Still, its supposed to be watertight back there...so thats something.

Barn doors, unlike split gates, do not provide sunshading and rain protection for you and your honey on the tailgate. Just wind protection. Clearly, then, it depends where you live. Chicago: barn doors. Maui: split gate.

technically its a 5. Single piece hatch. but:
Sadly all of the Mk2 supra open liftbacks rusted off the internet.

I was going to say... I’m sure you of all people would know of the asymmetric barn door.

I had a 95 rodeo like that, but red...like this actually
And I hated that tire swing. The irony is that I want one for my land cruiser now, but for the purposes of getting the spare out from under the truck and increasing my departure. The departure on the Rodeo was terrible because the gas tank was there. Lose/Lose.

Also, better visibility than a Ridgeline with a cap, no question. A Ridgeline with a cap and no backup camera should come with a warning that it *will* obliterate children and small dogs backing up.

Whats funny is that they still make the 200 series with a barn door option.

But barn doors can be done in a fashion so you can drive with them open.
See, they even put the little reflector on...
And you don’t have anything blocking the lights either.

What if a car has #6 and #1?
Bam! Chevelle Wagon! I detailed one of these at work the other day and was initially baffled as to why there were to handles on the rear gate. When I saw the extra hinge I thought is was the most badass thing. I’ll admit, I played with it for a few minutes while “Weapon of Choice” played in my head: “You can go this or you can go that”.
